Building the Better

Built, I suspect, to simulate the ancient dhow. Dubai sand on the Persian Gulf, looking north.
Now this may be worth breathing in the exhaust fumes of ten-thousand SUV's!
Perhaps it is just the shape of the building and not its intention that sways opinion.

Update 2/08: The wing-looking attachment on the seaward side of the hotel is a restaurant; sitting at a table, the effect is of floating over the gulf. There is a film on the construction of this which depicts lavish treatment on the inside of the building including gold leaf , marble, silk and satin everywhere. At $2000 a night minimum this is to be Dubai income for when the oil runs out!

the Burj Al Arab

  1. It does look as the sail of the dhow ...

  3. I was just getting ready to comment that it reminds me of a sailboat, when I went to Wikipedia to see what "dhow" meant. Now I know my thought is redundant. :)

  4. Gosh at least that has a connection to water/nature which the other building didn't. I quite like it but once again wonder about the need for it...and the monies involved.

  7. This is breathtaking, but is it worth it? We have been squandering human resources and other resources on things like this for centuries: pyramids; castles; bank buildings. That last one was meant to be a joke...sort of.

  8. This building brings up conflicting emotions in me. On the one hand, it's a work of art, very beautiful.

On the other, is it required or necessary? Not when the resources used to bring it to fruition come into play.

    But it stirs the senses.

  9. Goatman, I left you a response at my blog where I had posted a photoshow that was giving you trouble due to your dial-up connection. Please go there and read it. Too much to include here.

  10. I am sorry to say that I am singularly unimpressed by Dubai and all the excesses of its wealth.

But then again, I am quite impressed with the Taj Mahal and the excesses of its wealth.

Forgive me. It could just be the fact that I am trying to divorce an oilman in an oilman's state which means, of course, that his interests have been 'legislatively' protected ...

    silly, cynical me.
