Crystal

Deep in the heart of cold
I exist Unique among many
As you
A hopeful bright spark of existence
Here but for an instant in the flow of time
We shine brightly

I have sometimes wanted to try to photograph a snowflake with some sort of microscope/camera rig which could be set up winter-outside to keep the little guy from melting first. Seems that it has already been done by this fellow.
From CalTech in California he travels the cold snowy parts of the world to capture the images of snowflakes and even grows some flakes in the lab to further investigate crystalline-structure formation.
There is wonder everywhere if we only seek to find it. Small almost unseen places exist and we need only to look for them ,and see.

  1. These are so beautiful! So funny...the other day I also had the idea of photographing a snowflake, and wondered how to do it. And here you are with this lovely post...

"Here but for an instant in the flow of time
We shine brightly"...Snowflakes have such a short time to be wondrous, before they join their fellows. Thank you for capturing at least a little of their fleeting existence, by your words and photos. And now I'm going to visit your link and see how it is done...I would love to photograph a snowflake. Wish me luck, lol!

  2. The Order and structure coming out of chaos that snowflakes represent has always fascinates me.

  3. What a beautiful little poem Goatman! Did you write it. I love it very much. So much is said in so few words sometimes.

I also love the snowflake pictures..so beautiful.

I have a beautiful heart crystal hung from my rear view mirror in my car. The sunlight captures all the colors of the rainbow in it...I enjoy the colors changing in the sunlight while driving.

Hope your New Year is going great Goatman. Mine sure is...:o)

    Blessings,

    Rhi

  5. This is one of your most beautiful posts, yet. I grew up in the snow country of New York and remember the unearthly silence and paradise of perfect snow.

    Each snowflake a miracle...

Now Northern Cal is getting ready for five rain storms in a row!

Take care and thanks for continuing to visit my blog although I am a sporadic poster as of late.

  7. within each particle burns a fire...

loved your poem... especially because of your emphasis on uniqueness and ephemerality...

what a pity the pics do not open for me...

love the way in each post you draw our attention to one of the wonders of this world...

    namaste!

  8. Hi goatman, I'm sorry, again, for being so late to respond. I have to set up the notifications properly one of these days.

Anyhow, thanks for your concerns. It does look like the sea will reclaim my monsoon country. I know I should run for the hills, like you suggested. But I don't know,...may be there aren't enough vacant hills out here. Besides, after being away for two years, I just want to get back. There is just no place like home. :)

  9. BTW Did you read the new Atwood novel, Year of the Flood? I liked it a lot although it isn't as far fetched as one might imagine.

  10. Yes, it is Bengali.

I didn't know about li'l dogs and sunrise. I myself try to avoid it. There is something deeply depressing about a night coming to an end.

Anyhow, best wishes for you, and your ducks.

  12. I hope your New Year is going well, Goatman. The weather here is warm for January...all the snow has melted and we have had no precipitation yet in January. So no attempts at taking photos of snowflakes, lol!

  14. Noting the similarities between the snowflakes and the beautiful architecture you have posted lately.
Its a growing, bursting forth yet static and still at the same time.

  17. I had no idea that the beauty and balance in snowflakes could be captured by the camera. Is the snowflake not evidence that design exists throughout the Universe?

Your poem is beautiful and a reminder that we are each unique and can shine brightly too.
