Inspiration

So how long you have been deserting this pen
To hold and write the stories that keeps you alive
The tangling words where you loved to un-puzzle
That once it was a necesssity
But now time to write seems to be a burden
Now the stories are no longer need to be written
For all what shapes in life, are the breathing stories
The jotting down are no longer narrate the facts
The sound of breath, aren't captured within lines of words
Then silence hush fails to be described with words
For a momentum of silence described in words
Is nothing but loud words evaporating essence of silence
The truth is the pen is just kept there untouched
In fear that inspiration will not rise
Also unable to give it a try for the fear of failure

This with permission and by the pen of    Nasra Al Adawi
a blogging friend who lives in Oman on the Persian Gulf

Writing about not writing . . .
She certainly does a better job with English than I would with Arabic

Inspiration is breathing  in ~ ~~ Expression is breathing out.  A natural and necessary process.
I am inspired by images.  Not so much for prose but to try the obtuse metaphoric language of poetry.  I can obscure direct meaning with the best of them in an attempt to expand a thought or feeling  -- allowing a deeper meaning, we hope . . .
I am not so good at the prose: the structure, the prompts for genre, word limits, and topic (1500-word Fridays, etc).  But many are really good at this as I have seen expressed by others here on the blogs.  Must be different parts of the brain involved, the obtuse ammaglia rather than the frontal contextual pocket for example . . .  whatever they be called ?  A break from my logical-mind numeric/engineering training allows the connections which are dusty and untouched for the most part.
Although, how better a metaphor for weather patterns, dissipation of heat from an engine, predictions of human activity,  or flight of the predator drones   than the equations, mathematical models or anecdotal evidence which attempt to describe those realities?

But a question must result:
What could be the best inspiration?  Walk on the beach, trip to the moon, night at the tavern, visit to the gym, a person's statement,  photos and images,  trip to the desert,  or ??

  1. I think the best inspiration is whatever works, and there is no one thing for the person who seeks inspiration. Sometimes a line in some awful movie may trigger a creative response, sometimes it might be an odd comment on the subway, sometimes it could just be the way the sun hits the trees on a given moment. The real trick is to follow the inspiration instead of letting the moment pass. And that can be harder than seeking the inspiration.

  2. Inspiration ..... I don't know. My dreams perhaps ?? Consuming books on a weekly basis .... a thought. A word. An emotion. Hard to say. For me I kept waking up with too many words in my head and they needed to spill out ... it was frantic and exhilarating and then it stopped.

Right now I'm trying to just enjoy other's poetic endeavors and stop worrying about the lack of mine.

  3. I can only answer for myself--all of my inspiration comes from within--after all of the without is filtered through my understanding, soul, spirit, vocabulary and fingertips. To do what I do with the only impediment I ever find is when I try instead of just do.

  4. Good post, lyle, and just what I needed this morning. Inspiration? I've lost mine recently. I think there are times in one's life where other things take precedence. What I am going through now will be inspiring for me later when I have the time to write about it!

During more normal times, it is usually a dream or an animal that inspires me. xx

    For me, everything you mentioned.

  6. A day or two with crazy family visiting and then the next day total quiet and no chores. It takes a while to unwind, but if I am lucky I feel creative. Thanks for the visit!

-I felt that, nice work by your friend.

As for inspiration - I think, unhappiness. I cannot write when I'm even moderately satisfied with life. I really hope that's not the case for anybody else.

  9. I am inspired by nature and people. Yes quiet moments allow the thoughts and ideas to flow giving a mental picture of what you want to create. Having the time to let it happen. Thank you for your visit to my blog. Yes you are right I had way too much tension while in the canoe fishing. Keep up your wonderful writing. Here I Am/Carrie

  10. Inspiration is always there - it takes the attention of the writer to "discover" (or be hit on the head with) it.

Thanks for visiting my blog :)

  13. Thank you for honoring me through publishing my poem in your blog...

Its been awhile for me as I had been in program in Germany so now Im back ...I agree with the rest at times with life ..it holds its own poetry that you do not need to jot down and you allow actions and moments of it to be the un-written poem ...Hugs

  16. I've had writers block for a long while now. I feel as if my whole life had been taken away from me. I relate to this post, whats being said here

Now I am getting it back. I made a decision that will hopefully reduce my stress and change my life to more "mellow" and then I hope to get "unstuck" and be able to write my silly poetry once again. Who knows? Could happen?

    Blessings and stay well,

    Rhi

  17. I am surprised at how easily some find inspiration. Myself, I often feel like the writer staring at the typewriter waiting for an idea -- I need a desert, or some unhappiness, or some cold concrete, or a dream,or maybe a picture of a swamp to prod me on.

  18. Great "inner pain" and how we deal with it, can often bring incredible poetry of words and most absolutely "metaphors" I love! They seem to have meaning to each person that reads the same poem and yet "feels" it and connects to it in completely different ways..according to their life's experiences. No?

By the way I finally did a first draft "writing" poem just recently and posted it on my blog. First in a long while. I've also started writing in my journal again since I made "the change" I did. I'm finding my way back "to me" again..through the "cathartic pain...slowly but surely.

    Hope your doing good Lyle

  19. I find that sometimes just one word can start me off...can set me on an inspirational path....I can't guarantee that the path will be long and that it always will end up satisfactorily...but it's worth taking the first step or three...just to see where it leads...one is always allowed a detour or two. :)
