Slumber Songs
I
Sleep, little eyes
That brim with childish tears amid thy play,
Be comforted! No grief of night can weigh
Against the joys that throng thy coming day.
Sleep, little heart!
There is no place in Slumberland for tears:
Life soon enough will bring its chilling fears
And sorrows that will dim the after years.
Sleep, little heart!
II
Ah, little eyes
Dead blossoms of a springtime long ago,
That life's storm crushed and left to lie below
The benediction of the falling snow!
Sleep, little heart
That ceased so long ago its frantic beat!
The years that come and go with silent feet
Have naught to tell save this -- that rest is sweet.
Dear little heart.
Sleep, little eyes
That brim with childish tears amid thy play,
Be comforted! No grief of night can weigh
Against the joys that throng thy coming day.
Sleep, little heart!
There is no place in Slumberland for tears:
Life soon enough will bring its chilling fears
And sorrows that will dim the after years.
Sleep, little heart!

Ah, little eyes
Dead blossoms of a springtime long ago,
That life's storm crushed and left to lie below
The benediction of the falling snow!
Sleep, little heart
That ceased so long ago its frantic beat!
The years that come and go with silent feet
Have naught to tell save this -- that rest is sweet.
Dear little heart.

For the children yet to die
I know not when
I know not why
only then to enter the sacred glen
Me
Right now I'm reading a book called Interview with an Angel. One of the topics is about the loss of innocents. I'm still processing all of this, but I believe God looks at this horror we call human behavior and sees something else, something that we may never be able to see because we are limited by being human as we mourn what other humans do to each other.
ReplyDeleteThis brings tears to my eyes. My eyes have been filled with tears for a few days now; and over-flowed.
ReplyDeleteThis poem is so appropriate right now...the tragic massacre of those innocent, beautiful little children and the adults who lost their lives along with them at Newtown has torn our hearts apart.
May they all rest in peace....
Those of you who have children...cherish every moment you spend with them; hold them close; love them unconditionally; protect them.
I had tears in my eyes also reading this. Sigh..the "innocent" taken way far too soon.
ReplyDeleteI wrote a poem about this also on my blog just the other day.
Also dropping by to wish you and "yours" a Happy Holiday...hope some light is shed and we keep learning "the spiritual lessons" of our awakening.
Love and Blessings,
Rhi
