Spiral Gyra

Spreading out,  unwinding, expanding to explore and live.
A fractal I made.

A spiral galaxy , as is the milky way of which our solar system is a part;  way out on the edge are we.
The older stars are nearer the center with younger stars (ours) way out.  So we are the searchers, out on the edge spreading out into the  vast nothingness of the universe.

But how do we report back?

  1. But how do we report back?

Great question, several high-speed futurists have pondered the possibility that our existence and universe are nothing but a very, very advanced computer simulation. So maybe we are being watched.

  2. What need have we to report back? Them who want to know will follow if for no other reason than to come to our rescue which will turn to their own salvation.

  3. Oooo I like the walking man's response! It's questions like these that make me wish I had a working knowledge of morse code and a handy signal light.

How did you make the fractal?

  4. Lovely fractal and nice comparison to the spiral galaxy. Just the other day I watched a fascinating "Nova" episode about fractals. It was called "Hunting the Hidden Dimension".

I don't know so much about astronomy but the fact that the outer stars are younger seems counter-intuitive to me. I tend to want to imagine that as the stars are born they spiral outward as more stars are created from the center.

  5. Sophia,
As I understand the process: many stars come together due to gravitational attraction to begin the process. As they join and begin a spin (I am not sure why they spin but it probably is related to orbiting) gasses are ejected which birth new stars as the gasses cool in the outer parts of the spiral. Our sun is much younger than the stars which began the process in the center, and finally form a black hole as they implode. "Dark Matter" is involved in keeping the system forming but that probably is a discussion for another day.

  6. Aah pish, the young are always left on the outside, looking in. And when you're older, the young úns form a circle and stare at you. Guess we know where Earth got it's adult-child dynamic from.

  7. Red,
In Turbo Pascal a program is written which, for each pixel on the screen, assigns a color depending on how fast a simple math expression goes to infinity. Then different constants are inserted for the next pixel to determine it's color. Myriad pictures can be produced.
You would never expect many natural- design patterns to result.

  9. We need to ask ourselves this question..There is universe out there ..waiting to be discovered

  10. I agree with Walking Man..Why report back? There is so much beauty and the lure of the unknown awaiting us. I believe if we discover new things or new life, we probably would never want to come back, let alone report back. xoxo

  13. Maybe we are just "way too out there" to report back? If you know what I mean?...:0)

  14. Listening to "It's All Over Now Baby Blue" in your song list while reading and enjoying more of your posts. Did you read that he will be receiving the Presidential Medal of Honor? Fantastic!

I love your fractal. Astronomy is a passion of mine. Our 2012 home wall calendar features images sent back to us by Hubble. It's glorious.

  15. p.s. A short bio of Rilke addresses that name confusion--here. A Google image search offers numerous photos that show why I said he had the most amazing (haunting) eyes.

  16. Love these fractals, goatman...I want to enter in...

I don't think I would have any need to report back, but if I did, I would have to use telepathy in dreamtime. Seems to work for me..xx
